Georgia
Our state is the fourth state in the union and was
founded on January 2nd, 1788. We have the twenty-fourth largest
state and tenth most populous. Our major industries are textiles,
timber, paper, and agriculture including cotton, corn, peanuts,
soybeans, and poultry. Our capital and largest city is Atlanta.
To
the east is the Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina. To the south
is Florida. To the west is Alabama. To the north is Tennessee
and North Carolina. Our highest point is Brasstown Bald at 4,784
feet above sea level.

Our
state was named in honor of King George II of England. We are
the Empire State of the South and the Peach State. Our state motto
is "wisdom, justice, and moderation," and our state
song is Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind."
Our
state bird is the brown thrasher, our state game bird is the bobwhite,
our state marine mammal is the right whale, our state possum is
the pogo possum, our state insect is the honey bee, our state
reptile is the gopher tortoise, our state fish is the largemouth
bass, and our state shell is the knobbed whelk.

Our
state flower is the cherokee rose (Rosa laevigata), our
state wildflower is the azalea, our state crop is the peanut,
our state vegetable is the vidalia sweet onion, and our state
tree is the live oak. Our state fossil is the shark tooth, our
state mineral is staurolite, and our state gem is quartz.
Our
current flag was designed in May of 2003. Georgia has one hundred
and fifty-nine counties, six state forests, and sixty-four state
parks. Our state is home to Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge,
the Little White House, the Masters Golf Tournament, President
Jimmy Carter, and the friendliest people in the union.
